Helping Children Build Knowledge, Confidence, and Jewish Connection

At the First Congregation Sons of Israel Religious School, we help students in kindergarten through eighth grade develop a meaningful connection to Judaism in a warm, welcoming, and engaging environment. Our program blends Jewish history, holidays, traditions, prayer, and Hebrew instruction in ways that inspire curiosity, encourage participation, and help children understand how Judaism can be part of their everyday lives.

Our Approach to Jewish Learning

We believe children learn best when they feel comfortable asking questions, sharing ideas, and participating in hands-on activities. Our teachers strive to make each lesson age-appropriate, interesting, and relevant. Students explore Jewish values, customs, stories, and traditions through a combination of classroom learning, creative projects, music, holiday activities, discussions, and community experiences. Our goal is not only to teach information, but also to help each child develop a sense of Jewish identity, belonging, and pride.

What Students Learn:

• Jewish Holidays and Traditions: Students learn about the meaning, history, customs, foods, prayers, and symbols connected to the Jewish calendar. Holiday lessons include crafts, music, stories, celebrations, and opportunities to participate in synagogue traditions.

• Jewish History and Heritage: Students explore important people, places, events, and stories from Jewish history. Lessons are designed to help children understand where our traditions come from and how Jewish communities have grown and changed over time.

• Hebrew and Prayer: Our Hebrew program helps students build familiarity with the Hebrew alphabet, common words, prayers, and synagogue participation. Instruction is adapted to each student’s age and experience level. Students preparing for a Bar or Bat Mitzvah receive support as they strengthen their Hebrew reading, prayer, and service participation skills.

• Jewish Values: Students learn about values such as kindness, charity, responsibility, respect, gratitude, justice, and helping others. We encourage children to think about how these values can guide their choices at home, at school, and in the community.

• Jewish Community and Belonging: Religious school gives children an opportunity to build friendships with other Jewish students and feel connected to the synagogue community. Through group activities, holiday programs, services, and special events, students experience Judaism as something they learn, celebrate, and share with others.

A Program for Every Level of Experience

Families do not need to have extensive Jewish knowledge for their children to participate. We welcome students with different backgrounds, learning styles, and levels of Hebrew experience. You do not need to be a current member of First Congregation Sons of Israel to enroll your child in our Religious School. Our teachers work to meet students where they are and help them grow in knowledge, confidence, and connection.

K-8th Grade

Our curriculum is designed to grow with each student. Younger children are introduced to Jewish holidays, stories, symbols, music, and the Hebrew alphabet through interactive and creative activities. As students progress, they develop a deeper understanding of Jewish history, traditions, prayer, ethics, and Hebrew literacy. Older students are encouraged to ask thoughtful questions, participate in discussions, and take a more active role in synagogue life as they begin preparation for their Bar/Bat Mitzvah.
